Weizhao Tang 2025 SIGMETRICS Doctoral Dissertation Award
ACM SIGMETRICS is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Weizhao Tang as the recipient of the 2025 SIGMETRICS Doctoral Dissertation Award. This award recognizes the outstanding contributions of his doctoral thesis to blockchain research, which addresses multiple practical utility problems that span most layers of the blockchain stack and cross-disciplinary areas including optimization, graph theory, and game theory.
Weizhao Tang is a research scientist at Meta Platforms Inc. He obtained his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University, where he was advised by Prof. Giulia Fanti. Before that, he earned his B.Eng from Tsinghua University.
Weizhao's thesis, Algorithmic Techniques for Utility Improvement across the Blockchain Stack, proposes algorithmic solutions to blockchain utility problems across four layers of the stack. At the network layer, he designs and develops Peri, a latency reduction strategy using only local information, matching the performance of paid services. At the consensus layer, he designs CFT-Forensics, a lightweight framework that introduces accountability to Crash Fault Tolerant protocols. At Layer 2, he proposes displaying noisy balances in Payment Channel Networks to trade off privacy for utility, and proves a fundamental theoretical limit on such tradeoffs. Finally, at the application layer, he applies game-theoretic analysis to Concentrated Liquidity Market Makers (CLMMs), characterizing Nash equilibria and showing how liquidity providers can improve returns by following equilibrium-based strategies.
